Tales from London and Beyond

Drawing on his classical training and a lifetime of global travel, retired doctor Deenan Pillay’s debut EP 'Tales from London and Beyond' is a collection of "hesitant odes" to later life. about Tales from London and Beyond

Deenan Pillay is a retired doctor and academic. He finally has the time to explore the musical potential apparent in the classically trained violinist and Junior Exhibiter at The Royal Academy of Music.

Despite growing up deep in the heart of Kinks and Fairport Convention country in north London, his career took him to Sheffield (Human League), Newcastle (The Tube -Channel 4), Souf London (The Albany), California (The Chili Peppers), Birmingham (Ocean Colour Scene), Soth Africa (Hugh Masekela) and back to Muswell Hill.

Those influences will, no doubt, have influenced his musical creativity, along with classic acts such as The Beatles, Steely Dan, the often-overlooked Focus and the baroque stylings of J.S. Bach.

Whether the fact that his favourite album is ‘Kind of Blue’ can be heard in his own compositions is for you to decide – such compositions, now recorded back in his original home, include hesitant odes to retired life and the desire to stay fit, a 60-something’s attempt at a club track and a lament to an abusive relationship with a north London Institute.

The Gorge Song – the inspiration for the EP’s cover art – features vocals and lyrics from Deenan’s wife, Philippa Matthews and the saxophone stylings of Mike Hinchliffe.
